On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.
On day 80 of the Olympic torch relay the torch travelled 100 km south through four different cities, as it approaches the city of São Paulo and ultimately Rio de Janeiro.
It began in Indaiatuba, which is ranked as the #1 on the “Top 100 cities to live in Brazil”, according to the IFDM social index. The IFDM is compiled of data on education, health, income and employment of all municipalities in the country. It has a population of just over 230,000.
It then travelled through Itu, which means “big waterfall” in Tupi. It is known for the two rivers that flow through it, Tiete and Jundiai. It then went through the city of Jundiai, which has the Serra do Japi, a small mountain range which is a state park with one of the largest forested areas in the state.
The torch finished the day in Osasco, one of the world’s most dense cities with a population of nearly 700,000 in an area of 64.95 km. Osasco is just 25 km outside of Sao Paulo, the state capital.
