University of Tampa swimmer Martin Hammer set a new Norwegian national record at the Norwegian National Championships this morning. He broke his own record and finished first in the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 22.75, barely breaking his previous record of 22.77. Hammer set his previous record at the Sette Colli Trophy meet which took place in Rome, Italy from June 24-26.
Like many international athletes, Hammer trains in the United States despite being born and raised in Norway. He trains and competes with the University of Tampa, where he just completed his Junior year. At this year’s NCAA Division II Championships he finished fourth in the men’s 50 yard freestyle with a time of 19.67 and seventh in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 43.75. In addition, he was a vital component of Tampa’s first place finishing 200 freestyle relay. This relay also included Norwegian record holder Runar Borgen. Borgen holds the Norwegian national record in the 50 butterfly with a time of 24.18.
The Norwegian National Championships began this past Thursday and concluded today, meet information and results can be found here.
