With the European Junior Championships in the books, Russia and Italy brought home the most medals with 22 each. Russia earned the most gold, however, with 11 first-place finishes last week.
The Russians won three relay golds, and were led individually by Polina Egorova (two gold, two bronze), Mariia Kameneva (two gold, two bronze), and Kliment Kolesnikov (two gold, WJR in both 50 and 100 back).
Italy won two relay golds, and earned 9 individual golds highlighted by Giovanni Izzo in the 50 free, Ilaria Cusinato in the 200 IM, and Nicolo’ Martinenghi with an impressive 1:00.30 to win the 100 breast. Giulia Verona was also a double champion for the Italians, taking both the 100 and 200 breaststroke races.
GBR scored five golds, doing so with five unique swimmers in individual events. Hungary, the host nation, also won five golds and finished with 12 medals overall.
In total, 23 different countries won at least one medal, with 14 winning at least one gold.
