Kelsi Worrell has bowed out of the 50 free semifinals, where her 25.12 from this morning was the 8th fastest time of prelims. She was a bit off of her personal best of 24.98, but could have feasibly made the final. Worrell has already made the Olympic team with a win in the 100 fly, so perhaps she wanted to let someone move up to the semifinals for a shot at the final.
That person moving up is Margo Geer, whose 25.57 this morning earned her 17th. Geer has been under 25 before– if she can repeat that, she can probably get through to the final.
Meanwhile, Cierra Runge scratched the 800 free final tonight. Runge finished 5th in the 200 free final, and she’ll probably find herself on the 4×200 free relay in Rio. Runge was 8:31.59 in the 800 free prelims, about seven seconds off of her best time. Runge’s scratch would have moved 9th place finisher Becca Mann into the final, but Mann has been nursing a back injury and she scratched the race as well.
10th place prelims finisher Hannah Moore of NC State was 8:34.14 in prelims, just off of her lifetime best, and she’ll take lane 8 in the 800 free final tonight.
But her best time in the 400 is a 4:04.
Cierra went a 4:07.0 in the 400 free just now, and went a 4:07.9 at worlds last year.
Didn’t Runge train with NBAC squad under Bowman this past year?
Yes, in Arizona. Cal coach refused to give Cierra a release. Due to her courage, it all worked out like a dream for Cierra. It’s not easy to leave a NCAA number one team, but she did it. Now See Cierra in Rio!! Next year at Wisconsin. Go cierra!
Does anyone know why she decided to transfer to Wisconsin? Seems like Cierra swam well at Cal, got along with her teammates, and was very happy/excited to be a part of their 2015 title. Just wondering if there was a bigger reason or not behind her decision to transfer.
Maybe I’m being naive and more used the football transfer rules, but why are people mad at Teri? Cierra is the one who made a commitment and then reneged. Why should Teri allow her to transfer to an in-conference rival?
Wisconsin is not an in conference rival of Cal.
Cierra didn’t reneg on a commitment to Cal-she was huge contributor of points that got them an NCAA championship. I’d say she held up her end of the bargain. Careful Calmbear, unless you know what went on behind closed doors, probs shouldn’t be so biased. If I’ve been reading right, Katie was injured during training and left Cal in March, Kathleen left Cal after NCAA’s, did Bilquist stay? Weitzel opted out for this year. soooo, it seems like something is up with Cal. Cierra was with Bowman and that training group for years at NBAC in MD before going to Cal and that group just happened to relocate to ASU when the coach moved there.
Found this interesting, but in one of the Cal Women’s Swimming videos (posted on their FB page), Teri mentioned something, if maybe just her name, about Cierra making the team. Assuming relations are still good between Cierra and Cal since Teri mentioned her name amongst other Bears (whether current/previous) who made the team.
How nice of her to give someone else chance to make team!
