Ryan Lochte had already qualified for his fourth Olympic team by virtue of his fourth place finish in the 200 free, which earned him a spot on the 4×200 free relay. But by taking second place in the 200 IM behind Michael Phelps tonight, Lochte also earned the right to swim that event in Rio. After the race, Lochte spoke with members of the media.
On swimming the 200 IM with Michael Phelps for the last time on U.S. soil:
You know, being I guess, the world record holder, it means a lot. But, you know, I think the thing that is the best about this is the rivalry we have between me and Michael. I mean, we have been going at it for about 13 years now, and the journey — like I said, the journey isn’t over yet. It’s been a long journey, but it isn’t over; we’ve still got another month to put everything together and really give the world a show.
Asked about having seen Caeleb Dressel years ago:
Oh, yeah, I remember that. I remember the coaches saying watch out for this kid; he’s going to be great. You know, just seeing him progress throughout the years and especially when he went to Florida, just that improvement that he’s made, it’s definitely — it’s amazing. Once a Gator, always a Gator.
That last lap kind of reminded me of Michael racing Shaq.

Ryan is humble, happy, fast, and friendly. He has a kind heart, and he appreciates where he is in his life. He is confident without being cocky. He loves to race, and I always love watching him swim. Go RYAN!
