In a swim-off for the men’s 50 free final, it was New York Athletic Club’s Josh Schneider who was out like a rocket and won the race with a 21.84. William Copeland, who trains with Rockbridge Storm, touched 2nd in 22.09.
In the semifinals, Copeland and Schneider tied with a 22.13, just ahead of 10th place Paul Powers (22.17). Schneider put up his 4th best time ever, just off of his 21.78 from the 2012 Olympic Trials. Copeland, meanwhile, went a lifetime best.
Schneider will join the rest of the qualifiers for tomorrow night’s final, as follows:
- Anthony Ervin 21.55
- Nathan Adrian 21.60
- Cullen Jones 21.93
- Jimmy Feigen 22.02
- Caeleb Dressel 22.04
- Dillon Virva 22.06
- Michael Chadwick 22.11
- Josh Schneider 22.13
Schneider has looked a bit off this meet, but his 21.84 from the swim-off would have placed him third going into the final. We could see all eight contenders dipping under the 22-second barrier in the 50 free final, which is slated for tomorrow night.
16 years ago at the 2000 Olympic Games Anthony Ervin won gold in the 50 free and today he has another chance to make the Olympic team in this event and already has a spot in the 400 free relay! Great guy
Do you people remember in ’08 when Nathan Adrian made the team off of a swim off? That was cool
Would have been great if NBC had showed this race
Two 50 frees right in the middle of the pool,
what could be more exciting?
Mhmm. Thought so
