Just under 300 junior age athletes (males 2000-2001/females 2002-2003) from 19 nations competed in the Mediterranean Cup in Malta from June 24th-25th. The Italian team topped the medal standings earning 13 gold, 12 silver and eight bronze. Spain finished second with seven gold, nine silver and four bronze followed by Turkey who collected five gold, two silver and one bronze.
Two Italians and one Spaniard collected multiple gold in the competition. Thomas Ceccon of Italy won the men’s 100 butterfly in a competition record time of 55.10 and took the 200 IM in a time of 2:06.01.
Italian Giulia Salin won the women’s 400 freestyle in a competition record time of 4:17.55 and picked up gold in the 800 freestyle posting an 8:48.73.
Spaniard Marcos Gil won the 400 freestyle in a competition record time of 3:55.80 and took the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:52.32. Gil also finished second in the 1500 freestyle behind Italian Johannes Calloni who won the event in a time of 15:32.35.
Italian Veronica Montanari and Spaniard Claudia Espinosa were the two top women in the backstroke events. Montanari won the 100 in a competition record time of 1:03.77 followed by Espinosa who hit the wall in a 1:04.32. Espinosa took the 200 backstroke in a competition record time of 2:15.80 followed by Montanari who touched in a time of 2:16.18.
