Men’s WPWL 2016: Gold for Serbia in Huizhou

The Serbian team clinched the FINA Water Polo World League title for the fourth consecutive time (2013, 2014, 2015) this weekend in Huizhou, China, at the Super Final of the annual tournament which gathered the world’s best men’s squads from June 21-26.

Serbia beat the U.S. 10-6 (2-0, 3-1, 3-0, 2-5), while Greece defeated Italy 11-7 (1-4, 4-2, 4-1, 2-0) in the bronze medal match on Sunday.

Serbia remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, while Greece only lost one game to the USA after the penalty shoot out on Day 5 (semi-finals).

Australia proved too strong for Japan (12-7) and placed fifth. Event hosts China, playing with a very young team, were beaten by Rio 2016 Olympic Games hosts Brazil (16-4).

Tony Azevedo (USA) was the best shooter of the tournament and Konstantinos Flegkas (GRE) the best goal keeper.
MVP went to Branislav Mitrovic of Serbia.
