Ledecky Takes Unbelievable Run at 400 Free World Record

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Katie Ledecky was two seconds ahead of the American Record pace at the 200 meter mark of the women’s 200 meter freestyle on Monday evening in Omaha, Nebraska, and though the World Record line eventually caught up to her over the last 50, the early thrill had the crowd in the CenturyLink center charged from the first turn.

The crowd “oohed” and “aahed” as Ledecky tore through World Record pace early, charging out to a 200 meter free split that had it been a straight 200, is faster than all but 6 Americans have been in history.

Ledecky paid the price on the back-half, but held on to World Record pace until the last 30 meters, when she finally finished in 3:58.98. That’s still faster than anyone else besides her has been in history, and the 3rd-best performance ever.

A comparison of splits versus her own World Record swim at the 2014 Pan Pac Championships:

50m 100m 150m 200m 250m 300m 350m Final
World Record 27.85 57.87 1:27.91 1:58.30 2:28.37 2:58.74 3:29.07 3:58.37
2016 Trials 27.44 56.31 1:25.11 1:56.28 2:27.03 2:57.78 3:28.68 3:58.98
Difference -.41 -1.56 -2.80 -2.02 -1.34 -.96 -.39 0.61

Ledecky holds 8 of the 10 fastest swims ever. The top 5 are below:

  1. Katie Ledecky, 3:58.37, 2014 Pan Pacs
  2. Katie Ledecky, 3:58.86, 2014 U.S. Nationals
  3. Katie Ledecky, 3:58.98, 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials
  4. Katie Ledecky, 3:59.13, 2015 World Championships
  5. Federica Pellegrini, 3:59.19, 2009 World Championships

I think Ledecky’s switched her training up a bit, with an eye on the 100/200 and making all three relays.

Ledecky’s version of “eat my bubbles” is actually a compliment.

her swim proves she could drop a big chunk of time in both 100 and 200m freestyle….very good sign for USA going to RIO…..

Why did she go out in 1:56!
It’s brainless decision!
She should save her energy!

I think Smith during that 400 was the closest I’ve seen someone (in relative terms) to Ledecky in recent memory. Actually, probably ever. It was unnerving in a way…but it’s pretty clear she’s probably not fully rested.

Nice to see some swimmers like Smith readjusting to the Ledecky generation–catching up on the seemingly uncatchable.

Leah Smith deserves a lot of credit for her training, gut and ability to finish strong and going a best time (hers and 2nd in the world this year)

Well, 2013 Worlds Katie had some great competition from Lotte and was even behind for a chunk of the 800. Leah is definitely on the rise and swimming great!

while everyone else was watching ledecky, i was watching smith swim the 2nd 200 even faster than KL did. yes, check the statistics to back it up. my predictions is ledecies arrogance catches up with her at rio and ciera smith catches her in the race to take the gold medals and the worldrecord.

Ledecky will probably go 3:57 or 3:56 at Rio. While Smith breaks 4 minutes. And your arrogance actually proves itself, she was almost certainly untapered.
