2016 Olympic Trials Time Prediction Contest: Night 1 Results

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Current Leaders / Day 1 winner:

1. usausausa – 3.299%
2. Michael Andrew Wilson – 3.996%
3. SwimRay – 4.128%
4. RUN-DMC – 4.555%
5. jamesz44 – 4.672%

With an impressive display of consistency behind his/her predictions, “usausausa” has been crowned our day 1 champion of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Time Prediction contest.  The likely very patriotic winner was one of two contestants (along with the wonderfully-named Michael Andrew Wilson) to have all nine of his entries fall within 1% of that position’s final time.  Most notably, our victor was 0.33 seconds off Chase Kalisz’s 400 IM final winning time, and just 0.23 seconds off Connor Jaeger’s 400 free time.

Day 1 stats/notes:

  • The men’s 400 IM was the sweet spot for our contestants tonight; removing outliers (likely from submission issues), contestants were less than 0.75% away (~1.8-2.0 seconds) from the top three times, on average
  • That being said, >85% of our contestants’ predictions were faster than times swam in those respective positions in the final
  • The women’s 400 IM was also slower than expected; >90% of our contestants’ predictions were faster than the final times
  • Overall, the women’s 400 IM was the event with the biggest disparity (1.4-1.5%)
  • Special shout out to Rudy, who was the only contestant to correctly predict a time down to the hundredth (Jaeger’s 3:43.79 400 free)

Thanks for doing this contest. Next year you will have to make it easier to do the time entry. Many people struggled with converting to seconds.

It’s interesting that Elizabeth Beisel has been sick, causing the Ladies’ 400 IM times to be slower than predicted. I hope she gets better soon!
