For once the Italian commentators understood what was happening while it was happening, and not 5 minutes later.
53.18 That’s huge.
Last year early July at French Open she swam 54.37 in the 100 free and 1.55.00 in the 200 free.

Fede started out as a 100 free swimmer. At 15 she was 54,40.
Luigi ir orsi out ot rio now? He was slow on 50 and did not swim the 100 today
That diminishes a lot Italy relay chances
Yes I think he is out for good, unless they put him on the O. team by some political move. But it would be pointless, he has lost his speed. Very sad, and a disaster for the Italian relay team, when in shape he could swim 46” legs (flying start).
Wow. She’s definitely a medal contender now. It’s looking like only sub 1:54 will medal. She’s definitely got a 1:53 in her. So 1:53 low will probably be the winning time (1:53.3). Yikes.
Times don’t matter at olympic games!
Times are important to many of us – from Trials to the Olympics .
Times matter at the Olympics!
Damn, I did not expect that kind of speed from her
I seem to remember her as a speedy 54 mid 15 year old swimmer before she went distance. I rechecked * yes she anchored the Italy relay in 54.6 in the heats probably not full out. (as is her fashion ).
Wow that is a huge statement before rio.. She will certainly be a contender for a gold medal in the 200.
I am sure Ledecky will answer to that time in the 100 next week
In the B final??? Those times are not quite Campbell Inc times. if Katie is the fastest american in the 100m Free next week …Well the US has issues
LOL is just saying that Pellegrini appears to have some speed and where she’s traditionally been a 200/400 free swimmer that speed in the 100 should serve her well for the 200 free.
I don’t think ERVINFORTHEWIN is saying Pellegrini is going to win gold in the 100m free, so there’s no need to drag the Campbell sisters into this.
Exactly – as we all know katie is entered in the 100 free ( maybe for a spot on the 400 free relay ) and i am sure she can clock a 53.2 or somewhere close … thats all
Where Ledecky finishes in the 200m Free in Rio will depend on what Sjostrom produces. Not convinced PELLEGRINI can deliver a super fast time at this stage in her career without the assistance of the double banned swimsuits….wink wink
Nope. Pellegrini was definitely built for the 200. Even in Kazan last year she had the fastest 2nd hundred. I think she was probably 53 high at that point. She’s going to be close to 1.5 seconds faster than Kazan.
Will be good race, but I’m not convinced it’s Sarah’s race to lose like you allude to here. Ledecky has the fastest time so far this year and she hasn’t even rested yet. Sjostrom had somewhat of a rest/taper for her nationals in late March and still put up a time about 1/2 a second slower than Ledecky.
In the past she already broke both the 200 and the 400 free with textile suit.
She’s great and fastest then ever in the 100free this year.
If that’s the case Emma McKeon will be a surprise in 200 based on her 52.80 sec 100 free.
The difference is Emma mckeon doesn’t have the fast 400, Pellegrini has the endurance covered.
Emma has a 2.07 200 fly (in season ) which was faster in 2016 than any American (in season ).Those 2 events both denote endurance.
Actually it may be about the same as Maya di Rado but ahead of Camille & Hali
McKeon will win gold in Rio in 2 of her relay events. 4 x 100 free and IM …The medals in the 200m Free are very difficult to predict although i feel Sarah and Katie maybe are slightly ahead of the rest. but only by fractions.
