USA Swimming released the initial psych sheet today for the 2016 Olympic Trials, which begin Sunday in Omaha, Nebraska. We’ll be following up all day with observations and analysis, but you can start perusing the psych sheet for yourself by clicking the link below.
There are no entry limits, so a swimmer is eligible to enter any event for which they have a qualifying time, but there is no guarantee that each swimmer will swim every event for which they have entered. In 2012, Ryan Lochte was entered in 11 events, but only ended up swimming 6 events. Even then, he did not swim the finals of the 100 free.
For events 400m and longer, the swimmers with the top eight fastest times from preliminaries will compete in finals. For events under 400m, the top 16 swimmers will swim semi-finals, and the 8 fastest from semis will go onto to finals.
The only guaranteed way to make the team is to win an individual event, or finish in the top four in the 100/200 freestyle, but typically the USA will have room on the roster to take the top two in each event, plus the 5th and 6th place finishers in the 100/200 freestyles, as well.
Keep checking SwimSwam all day as we give breakdown the potential event lineups for a number of the USA’s top swimmers, including Lochte, Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, and many others.
A little off topuc, but when i open this page on my phone it automatically downloads the psych sheet. Does that happen for others?
Not on the pc, but on any tablets or phones.
Do we know who the oldest swimmers entered are? Any former Olympians who qualified again at 40+? Oldest trials rookie?
dewey – I believe Erika Erndl is the oldest this year at 38 – though she qualified the day before her birthday. Nothing like what we saw in 2012 with Torres and Evans and Steve West…

Erika Braun also competed in 2012 at 40
I’m wondering if Mary T’s 200 fly U.S. Open record will be broken at trials.
If all goes well for Michael Andrew until that point, then Friday, July 1st, 2016 will be the night that the Notorious MA dies of a heart attack… He’ll have the 200 IM finals along with the 50 free and 100 fly semis!!! Did he not learn his lesson last year at Junior Worlds???
I do know you meant it as a joke but please have a little clasd…
What happened at JR Worlds? Also – no time to look now – but does Michael Andrew have a shot at making the Olympic team?
I think it would be really cool to see a notation beside each entry time as to when that time was recorded. That would give us a perspective on the entries. For some, those are times from world titles last year, and some are from recent meets. We could see who’s hot, who’s been resting for a hike, who’s been relying on old times, etc.
*resting for a while
So I see Kevin and Mic Litherland in the psych sheet. Last I heard they were planning to swim for New Zealand. How are they able to compete at trials? Or did they not make the New Zealand team?
They didn’t make the team, but they still shouldn’t be allowed to swim here
Well, when it comes to nationalities, until you actually represent one country internationally, you can bounce around like a beach ball at a nickelback concert.
Hahah. Hopefully you do as well next week as you did on this reply.
Hey, look who it is! Good luck next week Jay.
Interesting not to see Tom Kremer in the 200 free, at least. He red-shirted Stanford this past year, to focus on training with Bowman in AZ…anyone have info on him?
SwimmingIsGood – Tom Kremer competes internationally for Israel.
Ah, that’s right…I forgot that. Thanks, Braden. Hope you all have a fun week ahead…no doubt your swimswam readers will! Can’t wait…almost here….Sunday cannot arrive soon enough!
Thanks! It’s going to be one hell of a hustle week….but we’ll have fun. We live for this.
