For the 3rd time this week, Danish 19-year old Mie Nielsen has lowered the European Championships Record in the 100 long course meter backstroke.
Her 58.73 in finals made her the first swimmer in the history of the meet faster than 59 seconds in this event.
The previous two record-setting efforts had Nielsen swim 59.16 in the semi-finals on Wednesday and 59.26 in the preliminary rounds also on Wednesday.

The latest swim also breaks her own Danish National Record – which had been a 58.84 from last year’s World Championships semi-final, before eventually finishing 3rd in the final.

Nielsen has always been fast on the opening-half of her backstroke races, though she’s had more success when she’s controlled that front half ever-so-slightly.
The runner-up Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was also under Nielsen’s old Championship Record. She finished 2nd in 58.94.
