Swimming Canada has gotten an early start on naming a roster for the 2016 World Short Course Championships. Naming the team 7 months out from the December meet will help build anticipation among the local fan base with the event being hosted in Canada for the first time in its history.
While Canada’s Olympic standards were stringent and resulted in several National Champions being left home from Rio, they’ve opened the criteria up for the World Short Course Championships, resulting in a roster of 20 men and 17 women.
While that’s actually two fewer women than they’re sending to race in the pool at the Olympics, it’s an extra 13 men.
Included among the list of 20 men is 6 of those aforementioned Olympians (Santo Condorelli is the exception), plus a new list of swimmers that includes Mack Darragh, who won national titles in both the 100 and 200 flys at the Canadian Olympic Trials, but wasn’t under Swimming Canada’s designated standard to qualify for the Olympic team.
The meet will be hosted from December 6th-11tth at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
