Koch, Hentke head small German European Champs Roster

The German Swimming Federation (DSV) announced today the German team for the European Championships in London (May 16-22).

15 athletes will represent the country – six women and nine men. Germany has held the National Championships and the first part of the German Olympic qualification last week.

The medal hopes in London primarily lie on World and European Champion Marco Koch and SC European Champion Franziska Hentke. “We still have some more athletes on the team who have made international experiences and thoroughly could place in  finals. But for all newcomers, it is all about to confirm their perfomances of the German Championships or improve their times.” stated German Head Coach Henning Lambertz. Koch and Hentke are the only swimmers who are on the German “Rio longlist”. The focus for the German top swimmers is on the Olympic Games and all current candiates for Rio must confirm their performances of the National Championships last week at a meet of the Mare Nostrum Tour or the German Open during the next 8 weeks. (German qulification procedure)
These six swimmers will give their debut at a major international meet: Antonia Massone, born 1997, she placed fourth in the 400 m freestyle at last week’s German Championships, Jessica Steiger, born 1992, 2016 German Champion in the 200 m breaststroke, Maxine Wolters, born 1999, gold medalist in the 200 m IM at the European Championships in Baku, Philip Forster, born 1992, 2016 Silver medalist in the 200 IM at the German Championships and Max Pilger, born 1996, bronze medalist in the 200 m breaststroke at the 2016 German Nationals.
