Oliveira, Almeida Post ‘A’ Cuts At Day 3 Prelims Of Maria Lenk

2016 MARIA LENK TROPHY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Note: This recap was originally done in “real-time”.

Just three events will be contested on day three of the Maria Lenk Trophy, with the women’s 200 free, men’s 200 fly and the women’s 200 IM. Each event has one swimmer who earned a FINA ‘A’ cut at the Brazil Open, but the top-2 times recorded here and there combined, prelims or finals, will qualify for the Olympic team (provided they’re under the cut).

Women’s 200 Free – Prelims

  • Brazilian Record: Manuella Lyrio, 1:58.03, 2015
  • FINA ‘A’ Qualification Standard: 1:58.96
  • ‘A’ Qualifiers from Brazil Open: 1

Larissa Oliveira of Pinheiros topped the women’s 200 free prelims in a time of 1:58.53, getting her under the FINA ‘A’ time of 1:58.96. That swim puts her into contention for an Olympic berth, as she and Manuella Lyrio have both now achieved A cuts. Lyrio swam a time of 1:58.43 at the Brazil Open in December, so her and Oliveira are currently in position to qualify. If another swimmer beats out Oliveira and her time from this morning tonight, they will take her place.

Jessica De Bruin (1:59.43) and Gabrielle Goncalves (2:00.06) will both have a shot at doing that tonight, as they are the 2nd and 3rd seeded Brazilians. Lyrio failed to make the A-final, placing 10th this morning relegating her to the B-final. The A-final will be highlighted by some international competition including 3rd overall seed Katarina Listopadova of Slovakia.

Top 8 Qualifiers to Finals:

  1. Larissa Oliveira, Pinheiros, 1:58.53
