Dana Vollmer Swims Lifetime Best in 50 Free Prelims at Arena PSS-Mesa

ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES AT MESA

Dana Vollmer has continue her impressive comeback after two years away from competition to give birth to her first child with a new lifetime best swim in the 50 long course meter freestyle on Friday at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series meet at Mesa.

The 28-year old Vollmer, who is the defending Olympic medalist in the 100 fly, qualified 2nd into the final of the 50 free in 25.00. That’s a new lifetime best for her, improving upon the 25.09 that she swam at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in 2011.

She did swim the event at the 2009 and 2010 National Championships, though not at the 2012 Olympic Trials, so there are fully-tapered times on her resume.

Her previous best time in the 50 of her comeback, which began in November at the Pro Swim Series meet in Minneapolis last November, was a 26.00 done in a time trial at that return event.

In many respects, Vollmer has been even better after her time away from racing. Besides that lifetime best in the 50, she also swam a masterful 56.94 in the 100 fly on Thursday to win that race ahead of Kelsi Worrell’s 57.27. The 56.94 for Vollmer is the fastest that she’s ever swum that race at an in-season meet: improving upon the 57.03 that she did at the 2012 Santa Clara Grand Prix – just a few weeks before beginning her Olympic and World Record run.

While Vollmer’s 100-and-shorter races are setting new personal standards for her, the 200 free that used to be a big part of her lineup hasn’t been as good. In her first time racing the event since her comeback on Thursday, Vollmer was 15th in prelims in 2:01.07 before scratching the final. Vollmer was on the 800 free relays that won gold in both Athens in 2004 and London in 2012.

Great job Dana! You can get faster and faster, remember Dara Torres! Forget the 200 and focus on your 50 and 100s. I see more Olympic Gold in your future! Good Luck!
