Indiana Water Polo: Schroeder Scores Four as Indiana Downs Harvard

Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Hoosiers held off a late charge by Harvard to secure their first CWPA win of the season, a 10-7 victory over the No. 13 Crimson. Candyce Schroeder led five Hoosiers on the score sheet with four goals, and Karrie Kozokar netted her fourth hat trick of the season. Indiana improves to 16-6 on the season with a 1-1 record in the CWPA, while Harvard drops to 19-5 with an 0-1 CWPA record.

Other Hoosiers on the score sheet include Kelly Matthews with two scores, followed by Kaybree Albright and Sarah Myerswith one goal apiece. Matthews has now scored at least two goals in 17 of Indiana’s 22 games.

Kate Pipkin‘s sterling freshman season reached a new high this morning, as she served a career-high six assists in the win (4th – IU history). Other Hoosiers credited with assists include Jennifer Beadle with two, followed by Matthews and Myers with one apiece.

On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper Mary Campbell made 11 saves between the pipes while adding a steal to her stat line. The game is Campbell’s third in a row with at least 10 saves, with the Harvard game being her 10th of the season.

Matthews championed the defensive effort from the field with four steals, followed by Pipkin with three. All in all, seven Hoosiers combined for 15 saves, the third-highest team total of the year.

The Hoosiers lunged out to a 4-0 lead, and held the Crimson scoreless until midway through the second quarter. Harvard regrouped in the second half and pulled within two goals heading into the final quarter.

At the midpoint of the fourth quarter, Harvard cut Indiana’s lead to just one score. The Hoosiers closed the contest with goals from Kozokar and Schroeder to put the game out of reach.

The Hoosiers were highly effective on the power play in this game, converting 66% of their chances while holding Harvard to just two-of-seven with a personnel advantage.

Indiana is back in action this evening against No. 16 Princeton (13-4, 0-1) at 8:00 p.m. ET at Canham Natatorium. The Tigers enter this contest after a 9-7 loss to the weekend hosts, No. 8 Michigan.
