Barratt and Coutts Qualify for Their Third Olympic Games

2016 HANCOCK PROSPECTING AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TRIALS)

The women’s 200 freestyle was the first Olympic qualifying event of the evening. Emma McKeon won the event in an Australian record time of 1:54.83, well under the Olympic standard of 1:56.95. Bronte Barratt finished second in a time of 1:56.34 while Madeline Groves finished third in a time of 1:57.84.

McKeaon and Groves have already made the Olympic team in the women’s 100 butterfly, but this is the first event that Barratt has qualified for. This will be her third Olympic Games.

The Olympic team nomination criteria states:

  1. The first, second, third, fourth ranked available finishers in the A Final of the 100m and 200m Freestyle at the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships , provided their combined time meets the Qualifying Time listed in clause 2(4) below will be nominated.
  2. The fifth highest ranked available finisher in the A Final of the 100m and 200m Freestyle at the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships may be considered for nomination, provided the combined time of the athletes that are ranked second to fifth meets the Qualifying Time listed in clause 2(4) below, may be considered for nomination.
  3. The sixth highest ranked available finisher in the A Final of the 100m and 200m Freestyle at the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships may be considered for nomination, provided the combined time of the athletes that are ranked third to sixth meets the Qualifying Time listed in clause 2(4) below.

According the criteria above Leah Neale (1:58.12), Tamsin Cook (1:58.14) and Carla Buchanan (1:58.34) will all be considered for nomination.

David Morgan and Grant Irvine both punched their tickets to Rio in the evening’s only qualifying event for the men. Both athletes were under the Olympic qualifying standard of 1:55.75 as Morgan won the event in a time of 1:55.63 with Irvine finishing second in a time of 1:55.73.

With Irvine qualifying for the team that now makes seven athletes from St Peters Western heading to Rio.

Alicia Coutts qualified for her third and final Olympic Games winning the women’s 200 IM in a time of 2:09.95. After having a disappointing year in 2014-15, where she suffered from a shoulder injury, Coutts has made a successful return to the Australian national team.

Kotuku Ngwati also qualified in the event posting a 2:11.03, which is under the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:11.39.
