The 2016 YMCA Short Course Nationals kicked off today in Greensboro, NC, running from April 4-8. Day one featured just the 200 free relays and the 1000 freestyle.

On the women’s side York and York County YMCA started the meet off with a big win in the 200 free relay, touching in 1:32.30. The team of Meghan Small, Cami Cook, Emily Ilgenfritz, and Courtney Harnish finished 1.47 seconds ahead of Bath Area Family YMCA who finished 2nd in 1:33.77. Middle Tyger YMCA (1:34.15) just out-touched Red Bank Branch (1:34.17) for 3rd.

In the 1000 free Leah Braswell picked up the second win of the night for York and York County, winning easily in 9:35.73. Cassy Jernberg of Schroeder YMCA was 2nd in 9:42.73, and Abbey Erwin of Boise Family YMCA was 3rd in 9:47.37.

The men saw an incredibly close race in the 200 free relay, with the top six teams finishing in the range of 1:23.2 to 1:23.9. Sarasota Family YMCA claimed victory in 1:23.27, with Hans Schroeder, Austin Katz, Danny Erlenmeyer, and Matt Nutter racing for them. Countryside Ralph Stolle YMCA was a close 2nd in 1:23.41, with Middle Tyger 0.01 behind them for 3rd in 1:23.42.

Like York and York County did on the women’s side, Sarasota Family YMCA won both races of the night on the men’s side, with Drew Clark claiming the 1000 free in 8:58.22. 2nd place went to Christopher Smith of Red Bank Branch was 2nd in 9:06.44, and Karl Bishop of Cheshire YMCA was 3rd in 9:07.48.

Prelims tomorrow begin at 9 AM local time with the 200 back, 100 fly, 200 breast, and 400 medley relay on tap.
