Mexico’s Olympic Committee Suspends Aquatics President Kiril Todorov

The Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) suspended Kiril Todorov, president of the Mexican Swimming Federation, from his position as the second member of the Executive Committee of COM.

The suspension comes after Todorov declared the alleged lack of solidarity from the COM in the case of the suspension by FINA.

At the beginning of the year, FINA temporarily suspended the Mexican Federation for not fulfilling contractual obligations concerning the cancellation of the 2017 World Championships. Mexican swimmers have continued their preparation for the Olympic Games of Rio by competing under the FINA flag.

During a press conference Todorov declared his displeasure with the lack of support to the FMN and athletes affected. The COM took these statements as an attempt by Todorov to disrupt the harmony of Mexican Olympic spirit. An ethics committee will be responsible for determining the course that will take the punishment.

In addition, this week the Mexican Olympic Committee anounced its decision to close its major aquatics facilities at the Mexican Olympic Sports Center. The decision was taken due to the financial crisis the Mexican Olympic Committee is facing.
