Pac-12 Women’s Psych Sheets Drop, McLaughlin Set To Compete

The psych sheets are now available for the 2016 Women’s Pac-12 Championships, with California freshman and U.S. National Teamer Katie McLaughlin set to return from a neck injury.

McLaughlin has not competed since early December. She scratched out of the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin after suffering a neck injury on the Cal team’s training trip to Hawaii.

There’s still the possibility McLaughlin scratches out of the meet if her neck isn’t healed enough, but for now, the freshman is entered in the 100 fly, 200 free and 200 fly, which would set up a brutal back-to-back double on Friday with the 100 fly straight into the 200 free.

A few athletes are entered in more than the allowed three individual events, which allows them to make decisions on which events to drop closer to the meet.

A few other notable tidbits from the psych sheets:

• Stanford freshman Ella Eastin is entered in the 200 and 400 IMs as well as the 200 fly. That’s pretty much what was expected, although the versatile Eastin could have swapped out the 200 fly for perhaps the 200 breast or another event.
• Arizona freshman Annie Ochitwa will have some difficult choices to make with her events. She’s entered in five events, the 200 IM, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back and 100 free. She’ll probably choose between the IM and the 50, which are back to back on Thursday, then will have to decide between a 100 fly/100 back double Friday or dropping one of those events to swim in a really tough 100 free field.
• Versatile Cal senior Elizabeth Pelton is locked into her three events, the 200 IM, 200 back and 200 free.
• USC freshman Kirsten Vose is also overentered, appearing on the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, 100 and 200 freestyles and 200 IM. The IM would seem like her likely day 1 event, with choices between the 100 breast and 200 free on day 3 and the 200 breast and 100 free on day 4.
