The City of Brisbane will open the new Emily Seebohm Aquatic Center in a community event this weekend in Fitzgibbon, Queensland, a suburb north of Brisbane.
The facility features an outdoor, six-lane, heated pool; an indoor heated aquatics programs pool; a shaded seating area; and new locker rooms. The pool will offer swimming lessons, competitive programs, aqua aerobics, and water therapy.
The facility’s namesake, the multi-talented Olympic medalist and former world record holder Emily Seebohm, has been a huge name in the Australian and international scene since 2007, when she made Australia’s World Championship team at the age of 14. The next year, she became the first Australian woman to break 1:00 in the 100 backstroke. In 2012, she set a new Olympic record in the prelims of the 100 backstroke and came back for a silver medal in finals. After a stellar 2014-2015 season, including three golds in Kazan, Seebohm (SwimSwam’s Oceania Female Swimmer of the Year) will be a major player at this summer’s Olympics in Rio.
The opening event will take place Sunday, February 14th from 9 am to 12 pm.
