INDIANAPOLIS – Amy Cozad (Indianapolis, Ind./Bloomington, Ind.) leads heading into Saturday’s women’s 10-meter final, while Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif./Stanford, Calif.) stands atop the men’s 3-meter field after Thursday’s preliminary and semifinal rounds at the USA Diving Winter National Championships.
Ipsen will carry nearly a 50-point lead into Saturday’s final after scoring 957.35 points over two lists on Thursday.Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass./Bloomington, Ind.) is second with 907.45, and Sam Dorman (Tempe, Ariz./Coral Gables, Fla.) is third at 905.45. Ipsen and Dorman won Tuesday’s men’s synchronized 3-meter event.
Ipsen, who also led after the preliminaries, scored more than 80 points on three of his six dives in the semifinals. His best marks came in round four with 94.50 points on his reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists. He closed out his list with 78 points on the difficult front 2 ½ with three twists, which carries a 3.9 degree of difficulty.
Hixon moved into second place in the last round of the semifinals after scoring 91.80 points on his last dive, an inward 3 ½ tuck. Dorman had the highest scoring dive of the day with 102.60 points on a front 4 ½ tuck in the preliminaries.
Cozad scored 663.05 over two lists of dives in the preliminaries and semifinals to head into the finals with a 3.35-point lead over 13-year-old Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas/Midland, Texas). Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H./Bloomington, Ind.) is in third place with 646 points. Cozad, who was in second to Parratto after the morning preliminaries, took the lead in round four of the semifinals after scoring 80.85 points on her back 3 ½ tuck. Cozad and Parratto paired for the synchronized 10-meter national title on Tuesday.
The USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Sunday, December 20. Friday’s competition features preliminaries and semifinals in women’s 3-meter and men’s 10-meter.
