The men’s 200 fly was wicked fast. Although it took place toward the end of the final session of the five-day European Short Course Championships in Netanya, Israel, the swimmers still had plenty left in their tanks, and the entire medal stand made the world’s top-five list for the season underway (see below).
In addition to Laszlo Cseh, who set the Hungarian, European, and Championship records with his winning 1:49.00, both Viktor Bromer of Denmark and Simon Sjoedin of Sweden made their respective national record books because of their performances on Sunday.
Bromer lowered his own Danish national record with his second-place finish of 1:51.62. He had set the previous mark of 1:51.81 at 2014 FINA World Championships in Doha. On Sunday he was out .18 slower but he controlled the second half of his race much better, and came home .37 faster for an overall improvement of .19.

Sjoedin, too, had been the reigning national record-holder in his country (Sweden) in the 200 butterfly. But by contrast, the Swede’s gain, which netted out to 1/100, came entirely over the final 50 meters. Sjoedin had set the national mark at the 2009 FINA World Cup stop in Stockholm with a 1:52.90 in heats. His finals swim in Stockholm was a bit slower, and he has never since been under that mark. Until Sunday’s final in Netanya. There he bettered his previous record with a strong finish, as seen in the comparative splits below:
