After just missing the 50m butterfly national record earlier in the meet, Alexandra Wenk has broken the German national record in the 100m butterfly on day 4 of the 2015 European Short Course Championships. The 20-year old clocked in at a time of 56.48, 0.46 seconds faster than the previous German record, held by Antje Buschschulte (56.94), done 9 years ago at the 2006 European Short Course Championships in Finland.
This is an impressive performance from a swimmer who, shortly after qualifying for this meet, wasn’t positive she would swim at this meet over safety concerns.
Wenk lead the first heat of the 100m fly semi-final, touching after 50 meters ahead of the field in 27.00. She the split 29.48 for her closing 50, placing her 2nd in her heat and giving her the 2nd-fastest seed time entering the final tomorrow night.
She improved her time of 57.18 from German Short Course nationals last month and now ranks 6th in the world this season. On Sunday night she will compete in the final of the 100m butterfly for her last event at Netanya 2015.
