Lithuania’s Giedrius Titenis has broken his country’s national record in the men’s 100 breaststroke for the second time in as many days at the 2015 European Short Course Championships. He also earned the bronze medal in the event, clocking a 57.02 in the final on Saturday night.
Coming into the meet, Titenis’ fastest 100 breast had been the 58.03 he swam at the 2009 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul, establishing the Lithuanian national record. In Netanya, Titenis started off with a 57.08 in prelims, simply crushing his previous personal best. He followed that up with 57.47 in the semi-final. During the final, he adjusted his first 50, taking it out a tad slower than in heats but faster than in semis, then brought it home nearly 3/10 faster than the two prior swims. His splits in Netanya were:

It’s a far cry from his 100 breast a year ago: at the 2014 FINA World Championships in Doha, Titenis went 58.51, failing to make the semi-final. This year, Titenis ranks among the top three in the world so far in the short-course season; he sits just behind Marco Koch (56.78) and Adam Peaty (56.96), who earned the gold and silver, respectively, in tonight’s 100 breast final at European Championships.
