Cal’s Natalie Coughlin was longest and fastest off the start. Kathleen Baker was just barely first at the turn in a packed field. In the end, in about the last five strokes, Missy Franklin used her signature finishing speed to surge forward and win the event in 1:00.03. Michigan senior Ali Deloof finished second in 1:00.10, Cal’s Rachel Bootsma vthird in 1:00.25, Coughlin fourth in 1:00.41, Carmel Swim Club’s Claire Adams in 1:00.46, Baker in 1:00.48, and Michigan’s Clara Smiddy in 1:00.49. The top seven swimmers all finished within less than half a second of each other.
Counting on early speed, Brooklyn Snodgrass finished first in the consol final in 1:00.68. Just behind her was Johanna Roas in 1:00.77.
I think she wasted to much time on short course and I don’t think that CAL in her case has helped her (swimming wise). If she had stayed with her previous teams she would have had better times by now I think. Not dissing CAL or anything but she would have been a better swimmer if she had stayed with Todd.
Or not having someone that is her caliber to train with anymore is hurting her… It wouldn’t take a Terri or a Todd 7 months to fix starts, turns, and underwaters but you can’t make up for not having someone there to push you
Difference with Grevers is she swam a 200 free before that 100 back.
1.57.30/1.00.03 are not infamous times but it’s not wonderful neither.
Really don’t know what to think about Missy right now.
Let’s see her 200 back today. She swam a great 200 back in Minneapolis a few weeks ago.
it’s not wonderful either
That`s pretty true but Grevers is like 30 ( 31 in March ) – his 5th Us trials soon , Grevers is impressive to be at this top level right now already . He has a 52 low in him for sure for next year . Missy has to put her focus on the details she avoided so long ( starts , turns , underwaters ) – She has 7 months to train with Todd . Those 2 are not to be compared actually .
Sort of agree and disagree. Yes, she’s 10 years younger, but he’s also not exactly over the hill. Phelps is swimming at his best (1:54.7 200 IM earlier this year, 50.4 100 fly, 1:52.9 200 fly) and we’ve seen a number of swimmers in their early 30s still perform prime. Grevers is focused on a couple events at most so it works for him. Also, he’s got the added advantage of all that experience and knowing what to do better at his age.
Missy, I’m a little concerned about. Doubt she’ll break 2:07 and 7 months means there’s really no margin of error with the preparation she still needs.
Let’s hope she’s got 2 seconds worth of improvement to go. Grevers goes 52.5, about the same as Worlds. Franklin’s time is 0.6 slower than Worlds. Heavy training?
