Alexis Brewer, who trains nearby at the Somerset Valley YMCA, has given her verbal commitment to Rutgers University. Brewer is a versatile swimmer who could find her way into the Scarlet Knight’s lineup in many different events:
- 100 backstroke- 58.39
- 200 backstroke- 2:06.23
- 100 butterfly- 58.28
- 200 IM- 2:11.25
Brewer was a finalist at the 2015 YMCA Long Course National Championship in the 50 fly, recording a 29.63 that put her 30th. Brewer also qualified for the New Jersey State Championships for Bridgewater Raritan High School.
Brewer will need to step up her game to be a scorer in the B1G Conference. Her closest races are both backstrokes, where it took 55.49 and 1:58.43 to score in 2015. Still, Brewer has shown good improvement over the last few years, just two years ago she had never gone under 1:00 in the 100 or 2:10 in the 200 backstroke.
Both of Brewer’s backstroke times are faster than the slowest swimmer Rutgers had at the conference level last year, so she should help them upgrade their backstroke group upon her arrival in New Brunswick. She also has a similar backstroke profile to recent Rutgers signee Nadia Nabhan. The two of them should provide good training competition for one another.
