Day 2 of the A3 Performance Invitational wrapped up on Friday evening with big swims from the Stanford men and UCLA women, who won 5 of 7 and 3 of 7 events, respectively.
The Cardinal men opened the session with a meet record in the 200 medley relay, when freshman Ryan Dudzinski (21.87), senior Christian Brown (24.48), junior Connor Black (20.86), and sophomore Sam Perry (19.76) combined for 1:26.97. In the first individual event, the 400 IM, Stanford placed freshman Abrahm DeVine (3:45.50), sophomore Curtis Ogren (3:48.94), juniors Max Williamson (3:46.75) and Justin Buck (3:53.11), and senior Danny Thomson (3:56.45) in the top 5. DeVine’s winning time was only .04 off his lifetime best. The Cardinal’s Black (47.46), Andrew Liang (47.63), and Gray Umbach (47.80) swept the podium in the 100 fly, while Liam Egan edged Hawaii’s Yuri Samouilich, 1:36.68 to 1:36.94 in the 200 free. Stanford finished the evening with a 1-6 sweep in the 100 back, led by Dudzinski’s 46.86.
UCLA’s women’s team won all but one individual event, beginning with senior Arlyn Upshaw’s 4:16.18 in the 400 IM. Upshaw was only a second off her lifetime best and over 4 seconds faster than at last year’s A3 Performance Invitational. Pacific Tigers went 2-3 in that with Whitney Jorgensen (4:19.32) and Cristina Mardones (4:23.02). The Bruins continued in their winning ways with Katie Grover’s 53.20 in the 100 fly and Linnea Mack’s 52.79 in the 100 back.
- USC dominated the 800 free relays. The men fielded Michael Domagala (1:36.56), Reed Malone (1:36.47), Jon Knox (1:38.46), and Pawel Furtek (1:38.91) for a combined 6:30.40. The women won their event in 7:12.65 with junior Chelsea Chenault (1:45.48) and three freshmen: Allie Wooden (1:47.34), Hanni Leach (1:50.35), and Katie Christie (1:49.48). Domagala’s and Chenault’s leadoff times would have won their respective individual events, but the Trojans were only entered in the relays.
- The Trojan women also won the 200 medley relay. Hannah Weiss (24.66), Riley Scott (28.00), Lucy Worrall (24.05), and Anika Apostalon (21.92) combined for 1:38.63 and a new meet record.
- Cal Poly junior Caleb Davies got the edge on the Stanford contingent in the 100 breast; he touched out Brown 54.70 to 54.87.
- Hawaii’s Franziska Weidner went 1:47.48 to blow out the field in the women’s 200 free. San Jose State’s Riley Spitser (1:49.79), who had the morning’s fastest prelim swim, finished third behind Weidner and Cal Poly’s Bonnie Diamond (1:49.29).
UCLA’s women lead the field by 142.5 points headed into Day 3, while Stanford’s men are up by nearly 700 points.
