CBDA Release Brazilian Olympic Qualifying Criteria

In an announcement dated October 19th, 2015 the CBDA outlined the criteria that has been put in place to select the Brazilian Olympic Team for the 2016 Rio Games.

This decision was made by the CBDA in consultation with the National Technical Committee.

The Brazilians qualified 19 swimmers in total for the 2012 games bringing five women and 14 men to London. The qualifying criteria, for the most part, is exactly what you would expect.

There is a max of two swimmers per event, swimmers must meet the FINA A qualifying standards and they will be following the relay selection criteria that is set out by FINA.

There will be five coaches selected. Four of the coaches will be choosen by a technical qualifying criteria while the coach who has qualified the greatest number of athletes for the games will take the final spot.

And finally the CBDA will have final word based on their own discretion and what is best for the team.

The one big change from what has happened in Brazil in the past is there will only be two chances for athletes to qualify. This is the first time that there has been only two competitions where Brazilian athletes have a shot at the Olympic team.

For London there were six qualifying events.

The two competitions that will serve as trials will be the Open Tournament, which will be held in Palhoca from December 16-19 and the Maria Lenk Trophy, which will occur from April 15-20.

Athletes will be able to qualify for events in the prelims, semi-finals or finals. Athletes can also grab a spot by posting a qualifying time leading off a relay given that they are not competing in the same individual event at the same competition.

The full qualification criteria can be found here.
