Double Event State Champ Tara Chapman Verbally Commits To Minnesota

The Great Wolf Swim Team and Centennial High School’s Tara Chapman has verbally committed to the University of Minnesota for the 2016-2017 season.

Last season, Chapman was a 4AA Minnesota high school state champion in the 200 IM (2:08.10) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.95), while her Centennial High School 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays both came in second place. She also holds five school records. Here are her top times:

  • 50 FR: 24.37
  • 100 FR: 51.22
  • 200 FR: 1:52.83
  • 100 BR: 1:03.53
  • 200 IM: 2:04.90

Chapman joins a Minnesota team fresh off a fourth consecutive Big Ten championship and a twelfth place finish at NCAA Division I Championships. Her 100 breaststroke time would have been enough to get her into the Big 10 ‘C’ final. She still has some improvement to come in order to make it onto the Golden Gopher ‘A’ relays, though. Last season it took a 59.57 to make the breaststroke leg of the 400 medley and a 1:46.13 to make the 800 free relay. However, Chapman should see some improvement under the leadership of head coach Kelly Kremer, who has been with the Gophers since 1998.

“The team, coaches, and school are all amazing,” Chapman said. “I can’t wait to wear the maroon and gold of my home state.”

Other commitments to next year’s University of Minnesota women’s team include Madison Preiss, Tevyn Waddell, and Lindsay Horejsi.
