Ashley Kubel, who swims for Academy Aquatics Club in Tampa, Florida, has committed to Georgia Southern. Kubel should be able to come in right away and fight for a spot in the Eagles’ lineup, where her personal best in the 50 and 100 freestyle would put her on relays right now:
- 50 freestyle: 24.92
- 100 freestyle: 53.58
- 200 freestyle: 1:54.54
- 100 backstroke: 59.52
- 200 backstroke: 2:09.76
Kubel attends Steinbrenner High School, where she is team captain for the the 2015 season. She represented the school at last years Florida High School State Championship. Her backstroke also holds a lot of promise for the Eagles, as she would have scored for them in the 200 at last year’s Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association championships. Kubel also displayed a willingness to swim a wide range of events for Steinbrenner, showing a good “whatever is best for the team” attitude. Georgia Southern was third in that competition, finishing in a tightly packed 2-3-4 below Liberty University and ahead of Gardner-Webb.
Georgia Southern has a relatively new and spacious facility, especially for a women’s only program. Their roster shows that head coach Nate Kellogg has recruited across the country, indicating that they have the right foundation in place to move up in their conference standings.
