SS Age Group Top

Welcome to Season Three of SwimSwam’s Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming. We are excited to be back and look forward to seeing what the 2015-16 season has in store for age group swimmers across the United States. Many teams don’t compete in September, so there are not a lot of results to sift through. Our first report covers the weekends of September 4-6, 11-13, and 18-20, 2015.

Noah Corbitt, 16, Hilton Head Aquatics: 500y free (4:41.17) – Corbitt began the 2015-16 season at the H2A Season Kick Off Meet where he went a second-best-ever 500 free. Only 3.2 seconds off his PB, he was 2 seconds ahead of last year’s pace at the same meet.

Isabel Ivey, 14, Gator Swim Club: 1000y free (10:17.43) – At the EAJ Speedo Fall Short Course Invitational hosted by Episcopal Amberjax, Ivey won the girls’ 13-and-over 500/100/1650 free, 200 back, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM. She also placed second in the 100 back. Ivey picked up new personal bests in the 500/100/1650 freestyles and the 200 back.

Vincent McNabb, 11, Hawaii Swimming Club: 100y back (1:04.10) – McNabb managed to swim in two meets during the first three weeks of September. At the Maui Summer Fun Pentathlon hosted by Maui Dolphins Swim Club, he won the boys’ 11-12 50 back and 100 IM, with new PBs in both events as well as in the 50 free and 50 breast. The following weekend he won the 100 free, 100 back, 50 fly, and 200 IM at the MAGSA Short Course Meet, and earned new best times in those events plus the 500 free.

Jacob Bening, 13, River City Aquatics: 100y back (55.62) – Bening dove right into his short course season with an excellent showing at the Paducah SwimFest hosted by the Paducah Swim Team. Bening came away with best times in the 100/500 free, 50/100 back, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM. His 100 back alone was 3.2 seconds faster than it had been at the same meet last year.

Natalie Cox, 11, Sunkist Swim Team: 100y breast (1:10.43) – Swimming at the Sunkist Short Course Classic in Jackson, Cox won the girls’ 11-12 50/100/200 breast and 100 IM, was runner-up in the 50 free, 50/100 fly, and 400 IM, and placed fifth in the 100 back. Her 100 breast time improved by 3 seconds from the same meet last year, and Cox picked up new times in 8 of 9 events she swam (all but the 100 back).

Iona Pascual, 13, Napa Valley Swim Team: 100y fly (55.48) – Pascual went six-for-six at the Tuffy Williams Classic hosted by Vallejo Aquatic Club. He won the boys’ 13-14 100/500 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 400 IM. Pascual earned new PBs in every event.

Joe Bunger, 11, Raleigh Swimming Association: 200y IM (2:13.41) – Swimming at the National Hispanic Heritage Meet presented by RSA, Bunger whacked 5.5 seconds off his previous personal best, and was 22 seconds faster than he had been last winter. Bunger came away from the weekend with new PBs in the 100 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM. Later in the month he picked up new times in the 200 free, 100 breast, and 400 IM at the RSA Red Black Intrasquad.

Grace Lapuz, 12, Davis Arden Racing Team: 400y IM (4:45.16) – Lapuz won the girls’ 11-12 50/100/200 breast, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM at the Davis Fall Meet. She went best times in all six events, as well as in the 50 free. Her 400 IM was particularly impressive; Lapuz dropped 8.8 seconds off her prior PB and was 20.8 seconds faster than she had been last year at the same meet.
