Nevada State Champ Shelby Koontz Heads To Indiana On Verbal Commitment

The Indiana Hoosiers have headed west in recruiting, getting a verbal commitment from Nevada freestyler/butterflyer Shelby Koontz.

Koontz was a Nevada state champ in the 100 fly last spring and also won the Northern Region swimmer of the year award for Douglas High School.

On the club scene, she swims for the Douglas Dolfins Swim Team out of Minden, Nevada.

Koontz’s Top Times

  • 100 fly: 54.63
  • 200 fly: 2:01.34
  • 50 free: 23.62
  • 100 free: 50.71
  • 200 free: 1:52.62

Koontz joins an Indiana team that is among the best teams in the Big Ten conference. The Hoosiers have been second in the conference for four years straight. In the butterfly races, particularly, the Hoosiers have a strong track record, with Gia Dalesandro putting up some big swims over her first two years, including back-to-back conference titles in the 200 fly.

Dalesandro will be a senior when Koontz arrives on campus in the fall of 2016 to begin her collegiate career.

Koontz could also develop into a relay piece in the freestyles down the line for a young Indiana team that has brought in a lot of talent over the past few seasons.
