Minnesota Gets Verbal Commitment From Backstroker Tyler Klatt

For more commitment articles, be sure to check out SwimSwam’s College Recruiting channel.

Tyler Klatt of the Academy Bullets Swim Club will join the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers next fall. The senior at Bartlett High School in Aurora, IL, was a 7th-place finisher at the 2014 NCSA Junior National Championships in the 200 LCM backstroke (2:05.77).

Klatt says, “I have big goals for my college career both in and out of the pool, and I know that the University of Minnesota will guide me there. All of the coaches are very smart, they have great facilities, and they have excellent academic advisers. When I went on my visit, I really clicked with the team and loved the campus. I can’t wait to be a Gopher!!”

Klatt’s best times:

  • 100-yard backstroke: 50.25
  • 200-yard backstroke: 1:48.02
  • 100-yard butterfly: 50.59
  • 200-yard butterfly: 1:56.95

Over the last two years, Klatt has dropped 7 seconds in his 200-yard backstroke to improve his value for the Gophers by adding another Big Ten-level event to his lineup. That time would’ve placed him 3rd on the Minnesota team last season – a team that’s already saturated with guys who swim the 100, but not the 200, backstroke. So far Minnesota Men’s Swimming have been; focusing on backstroke recruits, Klatt is set to join Garner Kohrell and Hunter Connelly in the University of Minnesota class of 2020.
