Robert Glinta of Romania broke the FINA Junior World Championship meet record in the men’s 100m backstroke Tuesday night on his way to taking the top seed heading into the final.
Glinta clocked in at 54.56 in order to take the win in the second semifinal of the night. That time shaved just 0.18 seconds off the previous meet record held by Michael Taylor of the United States.
Taylor set that record in prelims Tuesday morning, bettering the 54.87 mark that stood at the start of the competition. Taylor managed to take the second seed overall behind Glinta with a time of 54.62, which also broke his meet record from the heats.
The two were closely followed by Michael Andrew of the United States who tied Taylor’s prelims record of 54.74 in order to take the third seed overall. Luke Greenbank and Youssef Abdalla were the only other swimmers under 55-seconds, putting up identical 54.93s in order to take the fourth and fifth seeds respectively.
Glinta is in a fantastic position to get on the podium in the 100m backstroke, but in order to do so will have to battle with some tough competitors. Both Americans are likely to be in the mix for gold as is Britain’s Greenbank.
