Italy in, Australia out for 2015 Raia Rapida format meet in Brazil

The United States, Brazil, South Africa and Italy will compete in the 2015 edition of the Raia Rapida meet, a sprint format meet in Brazil in September.

That’s a shakeup from last summer’s lineup, which saw Australia competing instead of Italy.

The Raia Rapida (Portuguese for “Fast Lane”) is a sprint format meet, a unique meet lineup that caters to spectators and television audiences.

Each of the four teams brings a four-man roster – one swimmer in each of the four competitive strokes. The athletes compete in multi-round elimination rounds in 50-meter races of their respective strokes, plus a 200 medley relay at the end of the meet.

All four backstrokers go head-to-head in a 50 back, with the fourth-place finisher eliminated. In the next round, the three remaining swimmers race, with the third-place swimmer knocked out. And the final is a one-on-one showdown for the event title.

Each stroke goes through that process, and then all 16 swimmers compete in a medley relay to end the meet.

The 2015 Raia Rapida will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 13th. Rosters have yet to be announced.

You can find the meet website here.

That sounds really cool, it’s basically elimination time trials with a medley at the end. Sounds like a nice small and fun meet.

It is basically, a “made for TV” meeting to be broadcast in “Esporte Espetacular” on Globo TV.Detail:It is on Sunday 13th, not 15.

DDIAS, do you know how much time the swimmers have to rest between each round? (I assume it’s more than at skins events you get in Australia!)

It depends of TV schedule, but normally, five to 15 minutes(the interval for relay is bigger than between race rounds). All show is less than one hour of duration.

Pretty tough then! Makes Ervins 21 in the free and Santos 22 in the fly last year all the more impressive.
