Adam Peaty Demolishes 50m Breaststroke World Record

Adam Peaty of Great Britain took home the top seed in the men’s 50m breaststroke after destroying Cameron Van Der Burgh’s previous world record of 26.62 that was set in prelims.

With 25-meters to go, Peaty started to move well ahead of the field  in the first semifinal and ended up touching the wall in 26.42 to take two-tenths off an already tough record.

Peaty is now the official world record holder in the 50m breaststroke. He swam a 26.62 at the 2014 European Championships last season in order to break the record, however it wasn’t accepted by FINA due to an administrative error involving blood testing.

As the newly founded world record holder in the 50 and 100m breaststrokes, Peaty is establishing himself as one of the top breaststrokers in the world.

On day two of the World Championships, Peaty managed to take home his first world championship gold medal in the 100m breaststroke, taking down Cameron Van Der Burgh 58.52 to 58.59.

As only the fourth British swimmer to ever win at the World Championships, Peaty is now in a great position to grab a second gold medal.

Van Der Burgh took the second seed heading into tomorrow’s final, winning the second semifinal in 26.74. Kevin Cordes of the United States set a new American record in order to take the third seed.

When asked by an on-deck reporter what could be expected tomorrow, Peaty said, “hopefully tomorrow I’m looking to improve that.” If he improves again it will be the third official world record of his career.
