American swimmers went 1-2 in the men’s 10km open water final at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games on Sunday as Chip Peterson and David Heron pushed past the main pack for a podium finish.
Peterson won the gold medal with a time of 1:54:03 followed by Heron in 1:54:07.
Peterson was in second to Canadian swimmer Richard Weinberger after the fifth lap. With one lap remaining, he turned on the jets to give himself a huge lead and touch in first. Peterson swam the last 1.67km in 18:43.
Heron and Ecuadorian swimmer Esteban Enderica Salgado put on a very good race for second, but ultimately it was Heron who took home the silver. Salgado had the second fastest last lap out of the field, but couldn’t close enough ground to beat Heron across the line.
Weinberger ended up fourth as Salgado just got the better of him at the end. Salgado was a 1:54:09.2, Weinberger was a 1:54.09.3.
The top four finished over a minute ahead of the remaining competitors.
Peterson’s gold pushed the United States up to third in the overall medal standings giving them a total of four wins. Colombia is currently sitting in second with four golds as well, and Canada is currently leading with seven golds.
