Kelsi Worrell Sets Herself Up For 100 Fly Win In Indiana

The visitbloomington.com Bucceto Open in Indiana continued Sunday for the final day of competition.

100 FLY

Womens

Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell set herself up for a great performance in tonight’s finals after taking the top seed in the 100m fly with a time of 59.53. Her season best right now is a 58.24 that she swam on the Arena Pro Swim Series.

This morning, Worrell was out in a steady 28.31, coming home in 31.22. She was well ahead of the rest of the field. After the heats, Andrea Ward was her closest competitor. Ward swam to a 1:00.71 to grab the second seed heading into finals.

Mens

Continuing more Louisville domination, Josh Quallen put together the top seed in the men’s version of the 100 fly with a 55.45. He was just slightly faster than Zach Harting who grabbed the second seed overall with a 56.00.

The final should be tight. Louisville’s Aaron Young was a 56.35 this morning and Indiana’s Blake Pieroni was a 56.75.

100 BACK

Womens

Catherine Mulquin was the fastest swimmer in the pool this morning for the women’s 100m backstroke. She sported a 1:02.91 to claim the top seed over Claire Adams. Adams, 16, put forth a 1:04.04 effort to take the second seed just ahead of Ashley Leclair.

Leclair was third in 1:04.05, just one one-hundredth slower than Adams. Adams went in with the faster seed, but given how close they were this morning, it could be close again tonight.

Hannah Magnuson was the fourth fastest overall with a 1:04.91.

Mens

Grigory Tarasevich was the 100m backstroke leader by a longshot this morning. He cruised into the wall with a very solid performance of 55.81 to finish well ahead of anyone else.

It’s looking as though Tarasevich will have the opportunity for a runaway victory tonight, however the battle for second looks to be extremely tight. Nolan Tesone was a 58.40 this morning with Nick Hasemann almost matching that with his 58.66.

Throw Bob Glover into the mix who was a 59.07, and things will get competitive.

100 BREAST

Womens

The women’s 100m breaststroke prelims featured some young talent as 14-year-old Emily Weiss grabbed the top spot heading into finals with a 1:13.67. Weiss’ seed time is in the 1:11 range, and if she can head there tonight, she could be unbeatable.

Lucy Kramer was behind her this morning in 1:14.77 as was Lauren Edelman in 1:15.46. Kramer’s seed time is a 1:13-mid whereas Edelman’s is a 1:12-low. If Edelman can turn on the jets, she might be able to improve a placing or two tonight.

Cady Farlow is also in the mix for a medal. She was a 1:15.60 this morning.

Mens

The men’s 100m breaststroke looks to be a tight race. Sixteen-year-old Chandler Bray was the fastest man in the pool this morning with a time of 1:05.29. Dexter Thomas clocked in a 1:06.63 to follow suit.

Right behind Thomas was Trevor Carroll who rocked a 1:06.93 to take the third seed. Jack Wallar is also in the mix. He bettered his seed time this morning with a time of 1:07.26.

200 IM

Womens

Bailey Pressey clocked in at 2:12.67this morning to take the top seed over 16-year-old Sammie Burchill. Burchill was a 2:22.25 to finish just behind her. Burchill entered the meet with a faster seed time than Pressey who bettered hers this morning en route to taking the top seed.

Lauren Edelman, who also finaled in the 100m breaststroke, took the third seed in 2:22.44. Much like her situation in the breaststroke, she has the potential to win the final if she can hit her seed time. Edelman’s seed time is in the 2:18 range, which could definitely put her in contention for the win.

Mens

Josh Quallen took the top seed in his second event of the morning after clocking in a 55.40 100 fly earlier in the session. Quallen swam his way to a 2:09.04 200 IM.

The top three this morning were so tightly bundled, there’s no clear winner for tonight’s final. Blake Pieroni was second in 2:09.21 with Nolan Tesone right behind him in 2:09.32. Tesone is arguably the favorite.
