Phoenix Swim Club’s Miriam Sheehan Lowers Her Own NAG Record in 50 Back

10-year old Miriam Sheehan of the Phoenix Swim Club has broken her own 10 & under National Age Group Record in the 50 meter backstroke, swimming a 32.30 at the 2015 Phoenix Summer Invitational.

The last time she broke this record, Sheehan’s result was more surprising. Her old mark of 32.44, done in April, was at the time a lifetime best by five seconds. This time she was able to just shave another tenth off of the mark, and both swims clear the 32.85 done by Grace van Brunt of GCAT in Georgia as the old age group record.

Sheehan has been an impressive sprinter across multiple events; she also owns the National Age Group Records in the 50 fly in short course (26.64) and long course (30.43).

Sheehan won’t age up until the middle of September, and so will still have the entire summer to chase more National Age Group Records. Her other results from this weekend’s meet:

  • 1:10.48 in the 100 back
  • 1:10.16 in the 100 fly
  • 29.62 in the 50 free
  • 1:04.32 in the 100 free
  • 1:28.71 in the 100 breast

Among those swims, her 100 backstroke breaks Amy Bilquist’s Arizona LSC Record; her 100 fly breaks a 23-year old Arizona LSC Record by Katie Titcomb; and her 100 free breaks Taylor Ruck’s LSC Record. Sheehan had previously broken several of those records.

This girl has been tearing it up in practice too. She isn’t even fully tapered yet and she is still posting NAG records. It will be really fun to see her age up and develop her 200s of stroke. If it’s anything like how she’s done in the 50s and 100s, she’s gonna be a fun swimmer to watch. Keep up the good work Miriam!

10-year-old American kids still on fire!
I enjoy comparing these American NAG records to those here in France. Definitely not the same planet! 😆
We don’t have records under the age of 12. But Miriam Sheehan’s 32.30 in the 50 back is already faster than our NAG record for 12-year-old girls (32.72)!
Her 100 back is also closer and closer to Beisel’s NAG record of 1.09.96. Perhaps in the next few weeks if she doesn’t turn 11 before.
Impressive. Congrats to her.

The times these kids are putting out would have been kicking butt in the 11&12 age group back in my generation. It is exciting to watch how fast and technically excellent they are. Good job, Miriam! Excellent!
