Day 2 of the 52nd annual Settecolli Internazionali d’Italia di Nuoto (2015 Sette Colli Trophy) continued the thrilling momentum from yesterday, with Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom leading the pack yet again out of prelims.
Today, Sjostrom competed in the women’s 100m freestyle, where she cranked out a solid 54.36 to position herself in the middle of the pool for tonight’s final. Sjostrom will be facing some stiff competition, as the top 6 finishers all clocked sub-55 times. Italy’s Erika Ferraioli threw down her best time this year, 54.61, to secure the 2nd seed, while Italy’s fan favorite Federica Pellegrini registered a 54.65 for 3rd this morning. Pellegrini’s time is not far off the 54.52 she swam from March, which has been her best effort hus far this year. Other major threats in the women’s 100 free event will be present in the final, with Ranomi Kromowidjojo (54.76) and Inge Dekker (54.84) lurking in the 4th and 5th respective seeds. Last night’s 50m freestyle silver medalist, Chantal Van Landeghem also squeaked into the final, finishing 8th in 55.22.
USA saw Cammile Adams secure two top seeds out of her morning swims, where she registered a 2:09.86 in the 200m butterfly, followed by a 4:45.32 in the 400m IM. Adams currently ranks 6th in the world in the former event, having earned a 2:07.61 at the Aquatic Super Series in January of this year. But, the 200m fly race will not be an easy undertaking for Adams in tonight’s finals, as Canada’s Audrey Lacroix, the world’s 7th-fastest swimmer in 2015, is hot on Adams’ heels, having touched in 2:10.67 this morning.
In the 400m IM race, a tight battle ensued, with Adams earning the top spot by just .16 of a second. Adams touched in 4:45.32 over a pair of Italians, with Tony Carlotta earning the second seed in 4:45.48, followed by Stefania Pirozzi who finished in 4:45.72 for third. Adam’s SwimMAC teammate, Emma Reaney, the other American in the race, finished 16th overall to score the B-Final with her time of 4:56.00.
The men’s races were highlighted by South Africa’s Cameron Van der Burgh, who fired off a meet record this morning in the 50m breaststroke, racing his way to the wall in 27.24. That time is just a hair off of his best so far this year, which is the 27.17 he clocked in Eindhoven in April. Van der Burgh’s speed this morning was enough to hold off a charging Slovanian, Damir Dugonjic, who finished in 27.34. Italian Francesco Di Lecce was 3rd in the prelims race with his time of 27.45.
Finals of the 2015 Sette Colli Trophy begin at 6pm local/Noon Eastern.

Is that all Sarah is swimming today?
Yes. Only the 100 free.
Manaudou was disqualified in the 50 breast because he swam butterfly. 🙂
And very fast. 23.12! Best time for him this year. But not official.
He should swim the 100 free tomorrow just to see where he is in that event with the relay at worlds in mind.
Again, I think manadou has big plans for all of his 50s. That’s a tenth off of his best. Very impressive.
