Bob Bowman Hires Misty Hyman As New Assistant Coach At Arizona State

Video Courtesy of Swimming World Magazine.

Bob Bowman has announced his biggest hire as head coach of the men’s and women’s Arizona State swim teams. During the alumni dinner this evening, Bowman announced Misty Hyman will be joining his staff.

“I didn’t know we could get a candidate that is this exceptional” – Bob Bowman

Hyman is an Olympic Gold Medalist and former world record holder. Months after missing the Olympic Team in 1996, she went on to break the World Record in the 100 butterfly. Four years later, she qualified for the US Olympic Team and won a gold medal in the 200 meter fly.

As a college swimmer at Stanford, she twice received the Honda Sports Award for Swimming and Diving, recognizing her as the outstanding college female swimmer of the year in 1997–98 and again in 2000–01.

Below is her race video from the 2000 Olympics in Sydney:

Concerning Michael’s “Vitamin-D-Thera-Pi”: out-of-the-blue and back into the blue- there you are son! J.C., what a back, haven’t seen such apile of muscles between loung and heap before. What’s your plan? How far could you develope your ballet? Paul, let’s see, Luca – watch out – he to found the blues.
P.S. Phoenix? Gonna talk to the Old Cap” – right? P.P.S. an oversized boy? well done, compliments.

Since Bob will be coaching both the ASU men and women, I think it’s great that he’s adding a woman to the coaching team. It’s also nice to give Misty a chance to advance her coaching career, and the fact that she’s obviously a big name in swimming circles in the state of AZ (really, the whole US) can’t hurt the recruiting process.

I couldn’t agree more.

She came and did a clinic at my club team a few years ago and my underwaters improved dramatically after just a few hours work with her. Obviously they are the 5th stroke especially in SCY swimming, so adding someone who was so great at them is huge for ASU

As someone that has known Misty since she was an 11 year old at the old AZ Sports Ranch…I couldn’t be happier for her! She is a CLASS ACT! She loves the PHX area and will be invested in that program!

As far as coaching, she has coached a HS team in the PHX area for the past couple of years. She been doing the Mutual of Omaha swim clinics for at least a decade now and she is fantastic. Is that college coaching experience? Nope. But that doesn’t mean she won’t be successful.

Her club coach was Bob Gillett…one of the MOST innovative coaches ever! College coach – Richard Quick. Couple this with her experiences from Team USA and… Read more »

Misty swam the race Richard Quick laid out for her in the finals and swam it perfectly. Note in the video how excited he was for her. Richard passed away in 2009 from brain cancer, but related to me that Misty’s swim was one of the highlights of his career.

I want to know if my kids can have them coach a swim camp at ASU during the school break I would sign up now!

But can she coach collegiate swimmers? Appears that Ray Anderson forced this to start up his learn-to-swim initiative.

Has she ever coached?

She has never coached at the college level, but has done several jobs in the Phoenix area. She coached at a summer recreational club for a few years in addition to coaching at the high school she attended, Shadow Mountain. Before accepting the ASU job she was doing one on one lessons with competitive swimmers, so while this will be her first college coaching experience, she has done a lot around Arizona.

I ask out of curiosity mainly. I don’t think what we do is rocket science… and she would seem to have the requisite knowledge and personality.

But it would be nice if the Tusup haters would step up and voice their concerns.
