After three straight titles for Air Academy, it was the Cheyenne Mountain boys who came out as victors after the 2015 Colorado 4A Boys Championships in Thornton, CO.
Air Academy was hot right out of the gates, putting together a new 4A state record in the 200 medley relay with a final time of 1:32.90 after they had initially broke the previous record in prelims. Cheyenne Mountain settled for 2nd place (1:34.49).
The Air Academy Kadets continued to charge ahead, this time nabbing a 200 free win on the back of junior Tommy Baker. His 1:40.71 just barely out-touched the efforts of Cheyenne Mountain’s Kyle Leach. The freshman dropped over two full seconds from prelims to finish 2nd in 1:41.71.
Sophomore Daniel Carr got things on track for the Cheyenne Mountain Indians, winning his first event, the 200 IM, in a 4A record time of 1:48.93. He was the only swimmer to dip under the 1:50 barrier. Carr, who was also a member of the Indians’ 2nd place 200 medley relay, clocked a 44.67 in the 100 free to take his 2nd individual title of the day. The Indians finished off the meet with a 4A record and title in the 400 free relay (3:06.60), their win highlighted by a 44.46 anchor leg from Carr.
Cheyenne Mountain’s depth paid off in the long run, as they took the team title, but Air Academy had the most wins of the meet. Kadet senior Hunter Doerr, who led off the winning 200 medley relay, took the 50 free (20.42) after his 20.28 in prelims set the 4A record. He finished third in the 100 fly, an event won by his teammate, junior Caleb Hicks (49.65), after Doerr took the top seed in prelims. The Kadets obliterated the field in the 200 free relay, stacking their quartet for a win by over four seconds. Their first three legs were below the 21 second barrier.
Other event winners included:
- Liam Gately: the sophomore from Thompson Valley won the 500 freestyle in 4:34.22.
- John Thorne: with a 48.30 in the 100 backstroke, Gately’s teammate set a new 4A record. The Northwestern-bound senior won the event by more than four seconds.
- Daniel Graber: the NC State commit from D’Evelyn HS took the 100 breaststroke in 55.35, after his 55.15 from prelims set the 4A record.
