The Olympic rings from the 2000 Olympic Games that could be seen on the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge during the games have been sold on eBay for $17,000 according to ESPN.
The gigantic steel rings highlighted the celebration at the Sydney Olympic Games, which proved to be very important for swimming as Ian Thorpe dominated and Michael Phelps began his illustrious international career.
The rings measure 230 by 130 feet when fully assembled and weigh a whopping 110,000 pounds. The rings had been stored in a storage shed just south of Sydney. Bernard Maas, a local Australian businessman, bought the shed and much to his delight found the rings inside.
Maas’ new shed was previously owned by a company in Goulburn, NSW: the company that built the Olympic Rings. Maas put the rings up on the auctioning site eBay.
The rings attracted a grand total of 17 bidders with the winning bid going to a man in an inner-city suburb in Sydney called Pyrmont, near the harbour.
That is a bargain. Whoever purchased the rings got them for a very good price. Most definitely a private collector.
I hope somebody from Boston bought the rings and he’s planning to give them to the Boston Olympic Committee so they can be hung on the Bunker Hill Bridge when the Games come to the US! 😉
