Emily Werth had a spectacular season representing the UNC Asheville Bulldogs after just her first season. With four individual and two relay records, Werth has had quite an impact on the young program.
Background
Werth grew up in Marlton, New Jersey with her parents and two older sisters. She put on her first pair of cap and goggles for the Jersey Wahoos at age five. Werth swam with the team until her freshman year of high school when she joined the YMCA of Burlington and Camden counties/South Jersey Aquatic Club. Werth competed at Y Nationals for the team.
Werth’s High School swimming highlight was at a dual meet against Shawnee High School. She broke the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay team records. Her 100 freestyle record still stands.
Freshman Year
Werth’s success in high school carried over to college dual meets. Werth scored 2nd place points or better in the 200 backstroke at five dual meets for the Bulldogs. She was the top point scorer in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke at their double-dual meet against Gardner-Webb and Marshall. At the 2015 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Conference Championships, Werth raced to varsity records in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke. Her 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly were also personal best times. She swam a personal best time in the 200 freestyle while leading off the 800 freestyle relay. The relay dropped 11 seconds off the previous varsity time. Werth was also a member varsity record setting 400 medley relay team.
Sophomore Year
Werth continued to race backstroke and butterfly events for the Bulldogs. She earned valuable points in her events at dual meets throughout the season. In addition to individual races, Werth was a key player on many relays. At the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, she scored points in all of her individual events. Werth raced in the B final for the 100 and 200 backstroke. Her 100 butterfly not only earned 19th place points, but was a personal best. She improved her own Varsity Record in the event, racing to the wall at 57.65.
