Video: Katerine Savard Sees A 56 100 Fly On The Horizon

Katerine Savard qualified for the Canadian World Championships team as well as the Pan Am Games team this past weekend at the 2015 Canadian Trials.

There, she swam the three fly events as well as the 100 and 200m freestyle. The freestylers are newer events for Savard that she’s added this season. She didn’t swim the finals of the 100 free, but was eighth in prelims with a 55.65.

On day one she swam a 26.63 in the prelims of the 50m fly making finals, but chose to scratch the event in order to focus on the 200m freestyle. In the 200, she rocked a 1:58.84 to finish second behind Emily Overholt and claim her first national medal in the event.

With that swim she likely earned herself a spot on the Canadian 4x200m freestyle relay. Later in the meet Savard swam the 100m fly where she finished second to long-time rival Noemie Thomas.

Savard, the Canadian record holder in the 100 fly, was beaten by just one one-hundredth of a second posting a 58.18. She swam the 200 fly prelims the following day, but due to sickness wasn’t as fast as she wanted to be and scratched from finals.

Last year Savard was the Commonwealth Games champion in the 100m fly and has shown time and time again that she has what it takes to compete against some of the best international stars.

She’s looking to go a 56 100 fly this summer. That time will better her Canadian record and could likely land her a spot on the podium at the World Championships.
