Coming into the meet as the defending NCAA champs, the meet didn’t go quite as planned for Cal. However, the golden bears kept their heads held high, and left the meet with a well deserved second place trophy, and a sense of pride and purpose. Head coach Dave Durden explains his pride in that team attitude, atmosphere, and mental outlook.

I’m talking individual events. To have two highly touted classes, only to have one guy besides Murphy make consis, is pretty weak. Obviously, Durden is a very good coach. Clearly, he is that, and he knows how to run an efficient program- he learned that from Marsh. But he’s not that special, yet. And in my book, if you want to be a great leader of men you have to have be able to admit you got your ass handed to you when it occurs.

I’m wondering what happened to the cal freshman class and really the sophomore class as well. Only one score, Murphy. Lot of talent with little to show for it.
Long Gutierrez (scored in the 200 free and 800 FR) is in Ryan Murphy’s sophomore class. Justin Lynch, a freshman, also scored and now has a couple American Records to his name.
What a classy guy!
