Though Cal didn’t have the stellar day that most have become accustomed to with them, they are sitting in 2nd after the first day of competition in Iowa City.
As coach Durden discusses, as the meet progresses it seems that Cal will continue to get better and better, perhaps even stepping up to the plate to challenge Texas who had a monstrous Day 1 that saw the longhorns racking up 171 points to Cal’s 119.
Seemed like a pretty good day for Cal to me. They improved pretty well on their seed times generally and broke the American record in the 400 medley relay while Murphy broke the NCAA record in the 100 back. Texas just had a better day. Overall, this meet says a lot about the state of American swimming with 3 Americans winning the individual events faster than the winning times from last year. It’s been a great meet so far and it’s gonna get even better today!
